What to expect when visiting
First, reservations are highly encouraged if you are planning to visit for Tea Time at Dragonfly Delights Tea Room. For us to know how many guests will be visiting, anticipating any dietary restrictions allows the kitchen to prepare accordingly while servers can set tables efficiently.
If you do walk in looking for an afternoon tea, the kitchen should be able to accommodate, it just might not be exactly plated to the designated theme.
To make a Tea Time reservation call 204-729-8914, email info@DragonflyDelightsTeaRoom.com, or stop by in person at the tea room 106 Buffalo Drive Wasagaming Manitoba
The first course, sandwiches and savories plated with fresh vegetables.
When you join us for an afternoon tea you and your guests will be seated at a dining table by a server. You will be given a loose-leaf tea blend menu. Upon arrival please let the server know of you dietary restrictions or special instructions.
You will enjoy seeing Dragonfly Delights Tea Room with its eccentric mismatched décor of dining tables and chairs like I remember Grandma having. The TEAm welcomes you to be seated and just relax. Each table is draped with a seasonal tablecloth and protected by a plastic cover, as mandated by public health regulations.
Real fine bone china graces the table. A delicate teacup, saucer, lunch plate, a small knife and spoon is at each place seating. These cutlery pieces are not etiquette accurate, but I thought them so adorable and perfect that I just had to have them on my afternoon tea tables. A linen napkin will be set on the table to the left of your plate as well. Ice water, condiments and cream and sugar may also be waiting on the table. Occasionally we have fun with ice cubes. We enjoy slicing lemon or lime adding mint to the ice cube tray. Many guests have commented in favour of this lemon mint water.
Two delicious scones served with cream and jam
When the guests are seated. Please advise the server again who in the group, if any, is a dietary restriction request, or has given special instructions.
Once seated and settled you are now tasked with choosing a loose-leaf tea blend to enjoy. Each guest is honoured with their own pot of tea. Some groups request many different tea blends then pass the tea pots around providing a tea tasting experience of sorts.
Your loose-leaf tea will be prepared for you in a glass pot that has a strainer built in. A minute timer will accompany the tea pot so that you patiently await the steep for the perfect pot of tea. The glass tea pot is placed on a crochet potholder so that your hot teapot does not stick to the plastic covering. Once the steep is done you are welcome to pour yourself a delicious cup of tea, or if you prefer a server can do this for you.
The last course, three delightful sweets
The server will have brought to your table cream and sugar for you to enjoy with your tea of choice. Be advised herbal teas do not mix well with dairy. The milk will curdle. I encourage you to taste the tea on its own first. Then a second cup enjoy with either the cream or the sugar. The third cup taste the other, then when you pour your final cup add both cream and sugar to the cup if you so choose. Experimenting with your tea is highly encouraged.
I chose these glass tea pots as so many of the tea blends that we serve have such remarkable colour. I find it a wonderful part of the Tea Time experience to see this in the teapot not just as you pour into the teacup.
After the tea orders have been taken, cream and sugar brought to the table if needed, the tea order is served, the three-tier tray is brought out.
Savories on the first tier of your afternoon tea tray
Afternoon Tea is a three-course meal consisting of three dainty sandwiches or savouries, two delicious scones, three delightful sweets served on a three-tiered tray with fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, cream and jam for each guest.
A three-tier tray can be filled for a maximum three guests. For example, three sandwiches for each guest on the bottom plate, would mean nine sandwiches in total on the bottom plate in the stand. If the reservation had a dietary restriction or special instruction, this order will be plated all by itself so as to minimize the risk of cross contamination. When serving the items that are at risk the server will bring this tray out first, announcing to the table “this is the dietary restriction request”. This ensures that our guests are safe.
The plates on the three-tiered stand are removable providing ease of serving as it can be passed around. Each guest taking their items then replacing the plate to the stand.
Delicious scones
Afternoon Tea is to be enjoyed with your fingers. Take your time, The reservations allow you a generous two hours before we have another seating at that table. Sip your tea, enjoy conversation with those around you, savour all that the kitchen has graciously prepared for your enjoyment.
Some days the Tea Room is abuzz with voices while other days it is a quieter atmosphere. If it is quiet, you will certainly hear the instrumental music playing. If you know of any musicians that would like to play beautiful music for the Tea Room guests please pass on my information.
Themes for Afternoon Tea events change about every two weeks. The tea tray will have a different culinary offering to match this theme.
Sweets
Are you bringing little ones with you? Not to worry the Tea Room has three highchairs. The servers can share with you some books or games to help occupy the little ones. Each place setting will be set with china and we know that accidents do happen. We have found that the best Tea Time experiences for the little ones happen when the adults explain what afternoon tea will look like, the etiquette expectations prior to coming in. While seated at the table, engaging in conversation, talking about what they see, hear, smell and taste is also beneficial for little ones. When the little ones know what is expected and permissible the rewards are great.
Talking through those expectations prior to arriving is most advantageous. Discuss with the little ones that they should sit, ask for items to be passed, remember their volume as other guests are present enjoying their very special afternoon Tea Time. Encourage the little ones to ask questions. If you don’t know the answer perhaps a serve can help.
When a little one is presented with a new and different food, for some it is most stressful. We have observed that when an adult says, “eat what you do like,” or “have a small taste, if you don’t like it, then just leave the rest on the side of your plate” the children find afternoon tea most enjoyable.
buttered Irish soda bread and a cup of tea
I always recommend the herbal varieties Southbrook Berry and Verbena Blues for the little ones to enjoy while they visit. First because of the colour, second both of these are naturally sweet. The little ones need not add endless spoons of sugar in their tea. Theay do this, all the time and we know it will happen, so we do not find it shocking. Children really rather do enjoy being mad scientist when it comes to cream and sugar in their tea. As both of these are herbals, a dairy added may curdle. Ask your server about a magic trick to be done with Verbena blues.
Servers will check on you as they see you finish you first course, the sandwiches. They will at this time offer to refill of ice water if needed. When you finish your second course a server will offer to top up your tea pot with hot water. As you finish your third course the server will check in again to see if there is anything that you require.
A bill will be printed, brought to your table, you can request payment individually, groups or all together. Payments are made at the front counter. If you have the desire to leave a cash tip; this can be left in the tea pot at the front counter. If you pay with a credit or debit card, the machine will ask at time of payment for your tip preference.
A gurest favourite, blondie bar
